Many of Namibia’s more remote destinations can only be accessed by gravel tracks, sand
roads, or dry riverbeds where a standard vehicle may struggle. A 4x4 vehicle is designed to
handle these conditions, but only when used correctly. Simply driving a 4x4 does not
automatically make a route safe or manageable.
Drivers should understand when to engage four-wheel drive, particularly on sandy surfaces or
steep inclines. Low-range gears are intended for slow, controlled driving and should not be
used at high speeds. From rental experience, damage often occurs when 4x4 systems are used
incorrectly or unnecessarily.
Before entering challenging terrain, drivers should stop, assess conditions, and proceed
cautiously. When in doubt, it is always advisable to seek guidance from the rental company.
Navigation Equipment: Bring a map, compass, GPS, or two-way radio in case of signal loss.
